Understanding (CMCU), Director American Muslims Studies Program (AMSP). The program will serve as a research and resource center on the American Muslim community for academic scholars, media personnel and policy makers. It will also be a training center for younger scholars and community leaders. 

                                   

1999 – 2004                  Georgetown University, Center for Muslim-Christian

Understanding (CMCU), Director Project MAPS: Muslims in

American Public Square. The four-year project examined the role and contribution of the Muslim community to the American public life. The Pew Charitable Trusts awarded a grant of $1.25 million for this purpose. The project, through the development of reference tools, maintenance of its website, collection of survey data and compilation of original research studies, has provided a basis on which the future social scientists and scholars of American studies could build.

2002 – 2004                  President, Montgomery County Muslim Council (MCMC). Provided leadership in enhancing Muslims’ participation in the socio-political process at the grassroots level.

 

1994 – 1999                  Chairman, ICNA Relief / Helping Hand. Provided vision and supervised a major NGO operation in the field of national and international relief work. Planned and mobilized resources for, and directed several multi-purpose relief and rehabilitation projects in USA, Bosnia, Somalia, Afghanistan, India, Bangladesh and Kosova.

1983 – 1984                  Research Assistant, Roper Center for Public Opinion Research at the Department of Political Science, University of Connecticut. Involved in the preparation of several reports on various issues of public opinion.

 

1978 – 1983                  Executive Director, Pakistan Institute of Public Opinion, (PIPO), Islamabad, Pakistan. PIPO is a private survey research and polling organization and an affiliate of Gallup International. I was the first executive director of this pioneering survey research organization in Pakistan. 

 

1978 – 1983                  Executive Director, Business Research Bureau (BRB), Karachi, Pakistan. BRB was a specialized division of PIPO, mostly engaged in marketing surveys for the private sector and public corporations.

 

 

Grants/Awards:                       A research grant of $1.25 million by The Pew Charitable Trusts, Philadelphia, PA to study the role and contribution of the Muslim community in the American Public Square, 1999 – 2003.           

 

Departmental dissertation award by the Department of Political Science, University of Connecticut, 1987-88.

Media Interviews:                  Addressed more than thirty briefing sessions held at Georgetown University and Meridian House for various groups of academics, journalists and Islamic scholars of different countries on the topic of “American Muslim community after September 11.” The Public Diplomacy program of the State Department has invited these groups from Pakistan, India, Kashmir, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, Indonesia, Algeria, Japan, South Africa, Europe, Africa, South America, and Middle East

 

Was interviewed several times by numerous media outlets, including AP, NPR, Voice of America, ARY TV, GEO TV, BBC, NY Times, LA Times, Washington Post, Washington Times, Newsday, Chicago Tribune, and by radio stations in Chicago, NJ, NY and DC areas. Briefings and presentations were also covered by the media in Malaysia, Japan, Russia, Australia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and India

 

Participated in nine Digital Video Conferences (DVCs) on “Islam and Muslims in America”, organized by the Public Diplomacy program of the State Department during the months of July to December, 2002.  The target audiences of these DVCs were in Beijing, Cape Town, Delhi, Jammun, three cities of Australia, and five cities of Bulgaria.
